Overview

What is qualitative market research?

Qualitative market research is an observational, in-depth study of the thinking that drives buyer behaviour.

The direction and structure of the study are often revisited as new information comes in, so the researcher can explore issues and themes in real depth. Because the quality of the findings depends heavily on the skill of the researcher, and can be affected by researcher bias, experienced moderators and interviewers make all the difference.

Qualitative Market Research

What qualitative research reveals

Use it when you need to understand reasons, not just count responses.

01

Buying motives

Why people choose, reject or recommend a product.

02

Brand perceptions

What your brand means to the people who buy it.

03

Customer language

The words customers use, for sharper messaging.

04

Reactions to ideas

How people respond to new concepts and adverts.

05

Barriers to purchase

What stops people from buying, in their own words.

06

New opportunities

Unmet needs that point to new products and services.

How It Works

A typical qualitative study

Eight steps take a study from the first question to the final report.

1

Set the question

Agree the business question to explore.

2

Decide the objectives

Define what the study must uncover.

3

Plan the design

Choose the approach and structure.

4

Select methods

Pick focus groups, interviews or both.

5

Plan the sample

Decide who to speak to, and how many.

6

Collect the data

Run the sessions with skilled moderators.

7

Analyse

Draw out themes, patterns and insight.

8

Report

Deliver findings and recommendations.

Qualitative research is only as good as the people doing it, which is why skilled researchers matter.

When you need to understand why people think or act as they do, test early ideas, or explore a topic before measuring it with a survey.
Fewer than in a survey. A focus group usually has six to twelve participants, and depth interviews are one-to-one. Several sessions are run to cover different groups.
We use experienced moderators and clear discussion guides, and run more than one session so no single group or setting skews the results.
